Whether you know the term Modernity or it, it shapes the world we live, it defines what we think is important, what we strive to obtain, what we snub or praise.

Modernity has long promised a better world and better human beings. Fr. Stephen Freeman takes Modernity to task and asks us to consider whether “choice” and “progress” have created flourishing human beings. Whether we are Christian, Atheist, or Buddhist, it is wise to examine the notions that are shaping us all.

His talk was delivered on February 6, 2016 at St. Elias Orthodox Church in Diamond Springs, CA. as part of the Men in Black Series sponsored there.

About the Speaker: Fr. Stephen Freeman is an Orthodox Christian priest and author of numerous articles on theology and modern culture. His latest book is Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe (2011). He authors the blog site Glory to God for All Things, with an average of over one million views per year. His popular podcast Glory to God can be heard on Ancient Faith Radio.

Fr. Stephen earned his B.A. in Classical Languages from Furman University (1977), a M.Div. from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary (1980), and a M.A. in Theology from Duke University (1991). His thesis at Duke was entitled The Icon as Theology.

He was originally ordained to the ministry of the Episcopal Church in 1980. He served various Episcopal parishes until 1998, when Fr. Stephen converted to Eastern Orthodoxy along with his wife and children. He was ordained to the Orthodox priesthood in 1999. He has served as the rector of St. Anne Orthodox Church (OCA) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, since that time.
